WHO Global Rehabilitation 2030

The 3rd Global Rehabilitation 2030 meeting took place at the World Health Organization in Geneva on 10-11 July 2023. ICPS was represented by SG John Coughlan.

The meeting brought together governments, rehabilitation service user groups, funding bodies and international professional associations to strengthen rehabilitation as a public health priority around the world.

Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director General of the WHO, emphasised in his opening remarks that: “Rehabilitation is essential for managing many health conditions but it is inaccessible and unaffordable to most people around the world”.

Several important documents on global standards for rehabilitation were launched at the meeting. These addressed rehabilitation in emergency situations, the rehabilitation workforce and other topics. The “Package of Interventions for Rehabilitation” deserves particular mention, as cerebral palsy was one of 20 conditions for which the WHO has defined the resources and interventions for rehabilitation.

Key documents launched at the Global Rehabilitation 2030 meeting:

Strengthening rehabilitation in health emergency preparedness, response, and resilience

Guide for rehabilitation workforce evaluation (GROWE)

Routine health information systems: rehabilitation toolkit

Package of interventions for rehabilitation

— Module 3: Neurological conditions (incl. cerebral palsy, p. 105 et seq)

The meeting was an opportunity to connect with global policymakers and partner organisations working to improve the situation of persons with disability around the world.
